History

Mrs. Dorothy Lowell Salter founded the Salter Secretarial School in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1937 as a private school dedicated exclusively to training women as professional secretaries.  As its reputation for excellence grew within the academic and business communities, student enrollment increased to approximately 500 full-time students.

To meet the growing demands for professionally trained personnel, The Salter School found it necessary to move from its Victorian-style home on Cedar Street to the Tudor-style former Indian Hill School on 155 Ararat Street in September 1981 where day and evening classes were held year-round.  The word "secretarial" was removed from the title of the school in 1981 in order to offer diversified programs to all individuals.  Even today, the curriculum is constantly being revised and updated in order to maintain the high standards of professional excellence established by its founder.

With the move to larger facilities, The Salter School was able to add computer equipment to fulfill the training needs of modern-day offices.  In 1984 and 1985, the school successfully established two accredited programs under The Salter School banner: the Data Processing Division and the Electronic Technology Division.  Later, Office Administration, Allied Health, Electronic Technology, Computers and Accounting were offered as career training programs.  In 1995, the Medical Assistant program was included in the school curriculum and became an accredited program approved by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).  The PC Servicing program and the Medical Billing and Coding program were added to the curriculum in 2000.

In January 2002, Premier Education Group, L.P., located in Branford, Connecticut, acquired the school.  April 2002 through July 2003 saw growth in the presence of The Salter School with the designation of the Worcester campus as the main campus and branch campuses established in Malden, Tewksbury, and Fall River, Massachusetts.

The Computer Support Specialist program was added in 2002, adding even more options to those searching for technical schools in Massachusetts. In 2003, the school added a Massage Therapy program at the Tewksbury and Malden branch campuses and the Worcester main campus, and in 2004 at the Fall River branch campus.  In 2004, the Culinary Arts program was added to the Worcester main campus.  In 2006, the Paralegal program was added to the Malden and Tewksbury campuses.

The Salter School continually strives to provide resources to students who desire basic and advanced career training in Massachusetts.  In January 2007, the Worcester main campus relocated to West Boylston, Massachusetts.
