After a car accident that left her with two broken wrists, Christine Gauvin used her recovery period to reflect on her life. “It was time for a new path for me, and I wanted a new career,” Christine remembers.

Part of Christine’s recovery involved dealing with medical bills and insurance issues. She had some negative experiences where she felt she was not treated with compassion. “I wanted a career where I could make a difference in someone’s life and help them through a difficult medical issue like the one I had just faced,” says Christine. “This is why I looked into becoming a health claims specialist.”

Looking for a fast-paced career-focused program, Christine decided to enroll in the Health Claims Specialist program at the Fall River campus of the Salter School. She did exceptionally well. She was even selected to be a Student Ambassador to help new students get comfortable with the school. “I was honored by the opportunity to share my experiences with other students.”

Toward the end of the program, Christine completed her externship with the Overlook Visiting Nurse Association. The organization was so pleased with Christine’s performance that they offered her a job. “My externship site offered me a job where I loved to go each and every day,” said Christine. “As a health claims specialist, I now have a career with unlimited potential. My career skills are transferable to anywhere I want to live, and I am excited about my future.”

A Typical Day

Health claims specialists play a vital role in the healthcare system. Your daily duties might include:

  • Using computer software to code patient treatments
  • Preparing insurance claims to be submitted for insurance reimbursement
  • Following up on claims that were rejected
  • Organizing patient records, claim forms, statements, and payment histories
  • Keeping track of insurance claim forms
  • Performing data entry in office databases
  • Entering information into the electronic health records (EHR) system
