Health Claims Specialist Externship
One of the many strengths of a Salter education is our externship program. Toward the end of your training, you will be placed in an externship in a real healthcare setting, where you will get to apply the skills you have learned in our Health Claims Specialist program. The externships are supervised, so you will have guidance along the way to help you learn the responsibilities of your externship job. The externship provides you with real-world experience in your new field, and helps build confidence in your new skills. This is one of the many reasons that Salter graduates come prepared to their first job.

Getting Certified as a Professional Coder
At the Salter School, we encourage you to pursue nationally-recognized certifications as you near graduation. Certification shows that you have proven skills. Employers who are looking for medical billers and coders often prefer to hire applicants who are certified. Getting certified may also result in better job opportunities, higher pay, and more job security.
Students who perform successfully in our Health Claims Specialist program will be prepared to sit for the Certified Professional Coder certification examination offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders:
As electronic health records (EHR) systems are becoming more and more prevalent, we also suggest to our students that they become certified in EHR, through the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialists certification, offered through the National Healthcareer Association:
For most of our campuses, certification exams are held at an off-campus location, and are not covered in your tuition. Remember, getting certified can enhance your resume and put you in a position for better career opportunities. It’s worth the effort!
