Donating to Toys for Tots provides holiday gifts for children in need
New Bedford, Mass. When most people think of the holidays, they can’t help but think of the excitement and anticipation that young children feel during this time of year. Unfortunately, many families in the New Bedford area are living on limited incomes, and cannot afford many or any gifts for their children.
Thanks to the generosity of the staff and students at the New Bedford campus of the Salter School, more children in need will be receiving gifts this year. The campus coordinated with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program to hold a toy drive this December. The student council hung posters throughout the campus and set up collection boxes. Both students and staff contributed new, unwrapped toys, which will be delivered to families in time for the holidays.
The goal of the Toys for Tots program is simple: “to deliver, through a new toy… a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.” The Salter School is proud of the New Bedford campus for its commitment to the children of their community.
In addition to the toy drive, the students and staff also participated in a fundraiser for a women’s shelter located in New Bedford. The student council raised money by holding “Dress Down Thursdays,” where students were allowed to dress down if they donated money to the cause. Students could enjoy the privilege of dressing down, and at the same time, know that their donation was helping someone in need.
Other holiday activities are also underway in New Bedford. To ring in the season, the campus held an ice cream social and a holiday cookie day, where staff provided coffee and cookies for everyone to enjoy. These activities help to build a feeling of belonging among the students, and give the students a chance to socialize with their instructors and fellow students between classes.
The New Bedford campus of the Salter School offers two career-focused programs: professional medical assistant training and pharmacy technician training. Three additional campuses, located in Malden, Fall River, and Tewksbury, offer additional program options. The Salter School is proud of the students at all four of its campuses for helping to make their communities a better place during the holiday season.
