Thinking About a Career in Healthcare? Check Out These Two Expanding Fields

Category(ies): Professional Medical Assistant, Health Claims Specialist / Medical Billing and Coding

health care career fields growingThe Federal Government predicts healthcare-related fields will continue to rise

Whether you’re just starting out in the professional world or you’re looking to change careers, you probably want some assurance that the field you’re considering has solid potential for long-term employment.

That’s a smart impulse, especially when you consider that investing in your career can have a massive impact on your future – both in terms of job satisfaction and earning potential.

So where can you turn to get the real scoop on promising job options? The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) tracks employment data and trends. Because their information is unbiased, you can generally feel secure that their numbers are the real deal.

Recent numbers from BLS reveal that several fields related to healthcare are expected to expand between now and 2022. There are two main reasons for that:

  1. As the “baby boomer” generation grows older, people in that age group are utilizing more healthcare services
  2. Increasing rates of chronic disease such as diabetes

Let’s take a look at two fields that are expected to experience substantial growth.

Professional medical assisting

Employment of professional medical assistants is expected to grow by 29% from 2012 to 2022, according to the BLS. The agency notes that’s a “much faster than average” increase compared to other career fields.

How do you get started? Finding a reputable professional medical assistant training program in your area can help prepare you for life in a busy medical setting.

Those with professional medical assistant jobs act as the link between doctors and patients. They may help prepare patients for examination, assess vital signs, assist with laboratory procedures, perform blood draws, and handle administrative tasks to help the office run smoothly.

Medical billing and coding

According to the latest data from the BLS, job growth for medical billers and coders (sometimes called health claims specialists) is also expected to be “much faster than average” compared to other career choices.

The BLS predicts that positions in the medical billing and coding field will increase by 22% from now until 2022.

Medical billing and coding requires intensive training in order to handle patient billing and insurance reimbursement for medical practices. Entering a health claims specialist training program to learn about how to apply codes to medical procedures is an important first step to entering this growing career field.

People who are interested in medical billing and coding careers may be starting out at a prime time for two reasons:

  1. Right now, many healthcare facilities are transitioning to electronic healthcare records (EHRs), or are planning to do so soon to comply with certain healthcare regulations. The change from paper to digital means a significant amount of upheaval for many practices, as seasoned coders are forced to adapt to new processes and techniques. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the latest programs and systems before seeking professional employment.
  2. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the manual created by the World Health Organization to uniformly classify medical procedures, has recently been updated to the 10th edition. Practices will need to begin using the 10th edition (ICD-10) for billing purposes as of this October. Recent graduates of medical billing and coding programs will have the advantage of having had formal training in the latest version of the ICD, which is much more expansive than the previous version.
