Where to Find Medical Billing and Coding Training in Boston

Category(ies): Health Claims Specialist / Medical Billing and Coding

Boston is home to many healthcare and allied health training programs

The Boston region is famous for its commitment to healthcare. Think about the major healthcare institutions in the Boston region. UMass Memorial Healthcare, Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women’s, and Boston Medical Center are just a few of the institutions that make Boston a center of healthcare and research.

One of the results of this dynamic healthcare center is the emergence of many career fields. Consider all the careers in medicine you can imagine, from surgeons, internists, and researchers to all of the positions in medical technology, nursing, and administration.

One of the lesser known, but still highly important jobs in the field of healthcare is that of the medical biller and medical coder. Medical billing and coding specialists are responsible for recording the services that patients receive, ensuring that electronic health records are being kept accurately, and working with insurance companies to make sure all medical claims are being paid properly. They are a crucial link between healthcare providers, private insurers, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Getting trained to become a medical biller or medical coder

The Salter School prepares students in the Boston area to become specialists in the area of medical billing and coding through its Health Claims Specialist program. The program is offered at three convenient campuses near Boston.

Fall River, MA: Located about an hour from Boston, this region boasts numerous healthcare facilities such as Charlton Memorial and Saint Anne’s Hospital.

Tewksbury, MA: Just 30 minutes from Boston, and right beside the bustling Lowell, MA, the Tewksbury campus is near major medical systems such as Lowell General and Covenant Health Systems.

Malden, MA: Our Malden campus is just a few miles outside of Boston, with access to all of Boston’s finest healthcare facilities.

Getting the most out of the Boston region’s resources

The Salter School is fortunate to be located in an area filled with high-profile healthcare providers, as well as a wealth of smaller providers. Our school partners with employers in Boston itself as well as the surrounding regions to help place our students in meaningful positions after graduation. We also work with leaders in the region to help review our curriculum to make sure it is relevant for the ever-changing needs of healthcare providers.

Another way that the Salter School partners with area healthcare providers is our externship program. Externships are unpaid placements in actual medical facilities where our students have the opportunity to gain real-world experience in medical billing and coding. These externships are made possible by our ongoing relationships with area employers, and serve as an excellent growing opportunity for our students.

Getting started in this career

Why do people choose medical billing and coding? Many of our students say they chose the field because they wanted a marketable skill to work in the field of healthcare. People who choose this field often prefer office work to working directly with patients, and find that the office setting is a pleasant work environment. If you think that working in a billing or coding department of a medical office or hospital sounds like a job that interests you, then this career path might be right for you.
